Demanding capital punishment for the accused who had raped a girl in a moving bus in Delhi, chief parliamentary secretary Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu, along with a group of women, staged a protest in Amritsar on Wednesday.

Stating that the incident in Delhi had brought shame to the country, Dr Sidhu said, "This incident indicates that women are not safe in our country. I think all the political parties who have ruled the nation and the police must feel collectively responsible for this."

Raising slogans demanding death penalty for rapists, she said, "We need to take rapes seriously.

Death penalty can be the best deterrent for those committing such a heinous crime. The government should formulate a law in this regard. Such incidents not only spoil the lives of the victims, but also create a sense of fear and insecurity among women."
