The city police on Tuesday claimed to have busted a gang of cricket bookies with the arrest of five persons. Besides, the police also recovered electronic gadgets and cash from their procession.
Acting on a tip off that a cricket betting racket is being run from a rented premise in Rama Mandi area, a raid was conducted and five persons were arrested from the premises, assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Naresh Dogra said.
The arrested accused have been identified as Surinder Kumar, Gurmit Singh, Anil Kumar, Gurpreet Singh and Raj Kumar, all residents of different localities of the city, the ACP said, adding that 23 mobiles, a laptop and a specially designed briefcase apart from Rs 40,000 were recovered from their possession.
A case against the accused under the Gambling Act and Section 420 of the IPC has been registered against the accused.
Meanwhile, the accused would be produced in the court to seek their police remand for their intensive interrogation, the ACP said.
