Cases of rape and molestation of women in the district have witnessed a rise in comparison to those of last year; but, the special teams of women police control room (PCR) have been able to substantially curb incidents of eve-teasing in the district, going by the police record.
Compared to 44 cases of rape registered in the district from January 2012 to December 2012, 52 such cases were registered in the corresponding period last year, whereas against 19 molestation cases in 2012, as many as 57 were registered in 2013.
Meanwhile, the women helpline number provided for receiving complaints from women received 938 complaints in about 14 months after it was made functional in December 2012. The figure shows that women are becoming more and more aware and do not hesitate in coming forward in lodging complaints.
However, in spite of rise in crime against women, the police have been able to resolve several complaints regarding domestic violence and other issues.
DSP, Crime Against Women Cell, Swaranjit Kaur, said that changing social values and growing awareness of women rights could be the reasons behind the rise in crime against women and increase in the number of complaints of domestic violence.
"The women have become more aware of their rights. Now, they do not hesitate in objecting, if anything goes against them, but there has not been much change in the mindset of their male counterparts, which leads to conflicts. Hence, increase in the number complaints with the police," she said.
"But, majority of these complaints are resolvable, if handled properly, and can be settled out of court," she said, adding that this is reflected from the fact that out of a total 679 complaints received at the women police station, as many as 539 were resolved and, only in a very few cases, parties had to approach the court to settle issues.
She said that the hard work put in by the dedicated 10 teams of the women Police Control Room (PCR) has resulted in curbing eve-teasing incidents in the city. Each team comprises two women cops, she added.
