The Patiala police, on Wednesday, claimed to have solved the murder mystery of a 60-year-old man on a temple premises within 24 hours of the incident with the arrest of a priest of a nearby temple, who was a friend of the victim.

The crime was said to have taken place in a fit of anger, as the victim and the accused, both of who were in inebriated state, had an altercation, following which the victim had used foul language for the daughter of the accused. Thereafter, the accused, Surmeet Singh, hacked the victim, Ravinder Kumar alias Ravi, with a brick hammer on the premises of ‘Gugga Mairi-Shiv Mandir’ temple in Sanour village on Monday night.

Superintendent of police (SP investigations) Harvinder Singh Virk, while addressing the press conference, here on Wednesday, informed that Ravi was found dead on Tuesday morning.

“After the initial investigations, Surmeet Singh admitted that he had killed Ravi over the use of abusive language,” said SP Virk. He added that the accused was the priest of the adjoining temple – Dera Baba Ghori – and, both, were friends.

“But on Monday night, during the scuffle Ravi had slapped him and had abused him, after which the priest killed him while he was asleep to vent out his anger,” said Virk. The investigation revealed that the accused had directly targeted the victim’s throat to maintain silence during the act.
