The district (rural) police have arrested Attari railway station central excise and customs department superintendent, Gurdev Singh, with 10-kg heroin, worth Rs 50 crore in the international market, and a pistol, near Kartarpur on Friday late evening.

Acting on a tip off that narcotics were being supplied through road, a trap was laid near Kartarpur and a Tata Safari, being driven by the accused was intercepted. The heroin was found to be hidden under the front seat, SSP Yurinder Singh Hayer said.

More than Rs 17,000 was also recovered from the car.

The SSP added that Gurdev had joined the customs in 1980 and had risen through the ranks. The accused managed to develop a network with narcotic smugglers and has confessed to have supplied 9-kg heroin to a Ludhiana-based conduit involved in a drug racket, recently, the SSP added.

The heroin seized on Friday was also meant for supply to an unidentified person at Ludhiana and was received at Amritsar, he added.

"For supplying contraband, the accused charged Rs 50,000 a kg," Hayer said, adding that other details would be known only the accused was interrogated further.

On whether the police suspected the involvement of other customs officials, the SSP refused comment.

"The department of the accused has been informed about his arrest. We have asked for his service record," he added.
