The landing of an air force C-130 Hercules aircraft was delayed on Wednesday morning after the spotting of bicyclists near the runway of Sree Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport here.
Confirming the report, airport director Sunil Dutt said it had happened around 10.30am. “The Hercules aircraft was about 20 kilometres from the strip and preparing for landing when the air traffic control (ATC) observed five cyclists on the taxiway that connects to the runway. The controller advised the pilot to hold the landing to avoid accident,” he added.
An operations vehicle moved in to clear the runway. Replying to a query, the airport director said: “The cyclists were construction labourers working at the airport. There was no panic of any kind and the landing was delayed for only five to seven minutes.”
