Baljit Singh Daduwal, the radical Sikh leader who was supposed to be released on Thursday from the Faridkot modern jail after being granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana high court on Tuesday, was re-arrested by the police under Section 107/151 of the CrPC (preventive detention) immediately after his ‘release’.

Daduwal could not leave the jail premises outside which hundreds of his supporters were waiting for him since noon as he was taken into custody in the evening.

“The police drove him to some place inside the boundary wall a few seconds after he was released from jail and we are still unaware about what happened later. We do not know if Babaji has been rearrested.

But if that is the case, it is unfortunate. We are still outside the jail gates, waiting to know the situation,” said Gurmeet Singh, a relative of Daduwal.

Though sources say police arrested him under Section 107/151 of the CrPC after his release, higher authorities in the police department remained tightlipped on the issue.

SSP Faridkot Sukhdev Singh Kahlon could not be contacted despite repeated attempts, nor did SP(D) Bikramjeet Singh attend the call. Munish Chawla, DIG of Ferozepur range, was also unavailable for comment.

Sources added Daduwal was re-arrested and supposed to be produced before sub divisional magistrate (SDM) Kotkapura as SDM Faridkot was on leave. The heavy police force deployed outside the jail gate did not allow the Sikh leader’s relatives or supporters near the jail. His wife and relatives were gathered outside the premises till late evening.

“Gurmeet Singh Daduwal was to be released from jail as he had got bail from the high court in the five-year-old attempt to murder case. We had completed all the formalities by 4 pm and had submitted Rs 1 lakh as bail bond to the court of the chief judicial magistrate of Faridkot as per the high court order in the attemp to murder case registered by the Faridkot police in March 2009 and another Rs 50,000 in the Arms Act case registered by the Faridkot police in August this year. But he was not allowed to come out of jail and I have learnt that he has been re-arrested as a preventive measure,” said Kulinder Singh Sekhon, his advocate in Faridkot.

Daduwal’s supporters allege the police had opened the old cases against him out of political vendetta as he had become a member of the ad hoc committee of the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (HSGMC) from which he allegedly resigned while in custody.
