Dal Khalsa has asked the Punjab home secretary to order the release of 94-year-old prisoner Asa Singh on parole as his condition is reported to be very serious.
He was allegedly attacked by some inmates in the Hoshiarpur jail on Monday night where he is serving a sentence of 10 years in the 1987 bank robbery of Rs 5.7 crore.
Party president HS Dhami, who met Asa Singh in the civil hospital on Wednesday following media reports, said despite government orders that no one above 80 would be imprisoned, Asa Singh was languishing in jail.
He condemned the jail authorities for their "gross negligence" and for failing to take up the case of the aged and ailing person with the government in time. Urging the state government to consider his case on humanitarian grounds, he said an aged Singh needed proper medical aid.
