As the agitation by the Zameen Prapati Sangharsh Samiti continues in Sangrur, Dalit leaders of the district are now demanding the immediate release of 41 Samiti members, who have been arrested under Section 302 of the IPC for attacking the police.

The protesting members on Monday held a huge protest rally in the grain market here and gheraoed the deputy commissioner's office.

The Dalit leaders are also demanding the district administration to cancel the auction of reserved panchayati land at Balad Kalan, Nasul and Matoil villages of the district, while alleging that the auction rates were beyond the reach of landless Dalit farmers.

Talking to Hindustan Times, ZPSS leader Shankar Badra said, "The government was doing injustice to Dalits. The police lathicharged us when we raised our demands and put our leaders behind bars by registering false cases against them."

"We will continue our agitation until the government accepts our demands. We also want action against the policemen who lathicharged us when we were peacefully protesting against the auction," he added.

The protesting ZPSS members also submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner.
