Dargah cleric, wife set afire

Six assailants not only allegedly assaulted a dargah cleric and his wife, but also set them afire by sprinkling kerosene on them Malakpur village here on Thursday. The accused fled the spot after committing the crime.

Both the victims were rushed to the DMC hospital, where their condition has been stated to be critical.

Two followers of dargah also sustained minor injuries in the incident.

Tension gripped the village after the incident. Heavy police force has been deputed in the area to evade any untoward situation.

The Haibowal police have initiated a probe in the matter. Deputy commissioner of police Ashish Choudhary along with other subordinates reached the spot and reviewed the situation.

The victims have been identified as Sushil Kumar, alias Rana Baba, 40, cleric of Dera Sajjan Shah Vali, Malakpur, and his wife Shama, 36.

According to the statements given by the victims to the police, some of the residents of the area allegedly wanted to grab the dera land. They had made several attempts to occupy the dera, but to no avail.

On Thursday, the accused prowled near the dera and were deterring followers to go inside to pay their obeisance. As Rana Baba and his wife resented, the accused allegedly assaulted them and set them afire.

The followers doused the flames and rushed them to a hospital. In the attempt, two of the followers sustained minor burn injuries.

According to inspector Satinder Pal Singh, SHO of the Haibowal police station, the police have controlled the situation. The police have launched a manhunt to nab the accused.
