A day-old girl was found abandoned outside the house of a dairy owner in Gurmel Nagar of Lohara village on Thursday.

Dairy owner Charan Singh informed the Daba police who reached the spot and took the newborn to civil hospital from where members of Swami Ganga Nand Bhuri Wale International Foundation Dham, Talwandi Khurd, took her to an orphanage.

The Daba police have registered a case under section 317 (exposure and abandonment of child under twelve years, by parent or person having care of it) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) following a complaint by Charan Singh.

Singh told the police that he heard cries of a baby 9 pm on Thursday. When he came out, he was shocked to see a baby lying outside his house, following which he sounded the police.

Inspector Jatinder Kumar, incharge at Daba police station, said the police had initiated investigation in the matter and were checking the record of hospitals, nursing homes and midwives of the area.
