Coming down heavily on the commercial establishments using domestic LPG in violation of the Essential Commodities Act, the teams constituted by the Ludhiana deputy commissioner on Friday conducted raids and confiscated 40 domestic cylinders from various dhabas and restaurants.

The action was initiated following the report "LPG misuse rampant" carried in HT Live Ludhiana on April 16 wherein the DC while giving his version had promised to take serious note of the issue.

DC Rahul Tewari said, "This is just a warning to the violators, but next time I will impose Section 144 if I catch them using domestic LPG for commercial purpose. Also, we will file a criminal case against the offenders in addition to confiscation of the cylinders."

The district controllers in the department of food, civil supplies and consumer affairs were asked to initiate appropriate action against the dhaba and restaurant owners guilty of the violation.

Additional deputy commissioner (ADC) general Rupanjali Karthik checked the noted Hotel Maharaja Regency on Ferozepur Road where the gas cylinder being used was commercial, but there was no record of the supply. Hence, the owners have been asked to give an explanation at the earliest.

A cylinder was seized from Diamond Hotel, while five cylinders were seized from dhabas in the same locality.

SDM Ludhiana (west) Kuljeetpal Mahi along with his team seized 16 domestic gas cylinders followed by a cylinder by Jasvir Singh, SDM Samrala.

On the other hand Jagraon SDM Isha Kalia confiscated 17 domestic gas cylinders from different dhabas and restaurants.
