Amritsar Divisional commissioner Anurag Verma has directed the deputy commissioners of all the eight districts of Jalandhar division to send the executive officers of the municipal bodies under their jurisdiction to Dera Radha Soami in Beas to get firsthand information on sanitation and cleanliness there.
"The purpose of this exercise is to try to motivate the executive officers and to try to emulate the best practices of the dera," the commissioner stated in a communique sent to the DCs of Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Hoshiapur and Nawanshahr districts.
Verma stated in the communique that impressed by the cleanliness and excellent sanitation services in the dera, he had sent a team consisting of executive officers of the MCs of Kapurthala, Phillaur and Hoshiarpur to the dera recently.
The team found that the process of cleaning of streets/lanes commences at 2, so that by the time the sun rises, the complex is totally neat and clean. "The best practices at the dera could easily be replicated by the municipal committees," the communique said.
Verma added that the team also found that the collection of garbage is done at the same time when the streets are being cleaned. In contrast, in most of the MCs, after cleaning of streets, garbage dumps are left in the open and are invariably removed after a gap of few hours.
The team of executive officers also found that the dera has set up a sewerage treatment plant "in a very environment-friendly manner:". "Since, most of the municipal committees are starved of funds, this model can be very useful for these committees," the communique stated.
Verma has also written to the director of local government department to look into the possibility of adopting the dera model for the MCs.
