DGP Shashi Kant, who visited Faridkot district central jail on Wednesday evening, lauded the role of jail authorities who initiated the de-addiction centre project there. As many as 15 jail inmates were under treatment while 20 had already been treated in the de-addiction centre.

He added that the state government was determined to break the nexus between jail inmates and drug mafia. Under this programme, 250 jail inmates had been identified so far and shifted to other jails for their alleged involvement in supply of drugs in prisons.

Speaking about the alarming increase in drug addiction cases in the state, the DGP referred to a survey which showed that 70% youths consumed drugs and even 66% school children had already used drugs at least once.

The DGP also said that the jails department was closely watching activities of its own staff and action would be taken if any department employee was found involved in drugs supply in jails.
