Though the police have successfully recovered a girl who was missing from the city for past one week, it had landed them into an awkward situation as the body of the "same girl" had been cremated with the permission of police on Tuesday.

A resident of Surakhpir Road in Bathinda, 20-year-old Amritpal Kaur had gone missing from her home last week. He parents reported the matter to police. In between, a villager found a body of a woman in an abandoned room in a field near Beer Talab village on Monday afternoon. The spot where the body was found was not far from the house of Amritpal Kaur.

The family of the missing girl was called for the identification of the body by police. They claimed that the body was that of their daughter's. The family members were about to cremate the body on Tuesday afternoon when they received a call from their relative, who said that Amritpal Kaur was alive and was spotted in Amritsar. Father of Amritpal Kaur was about to light the pyre when the call from his relative created confusion.

However, the family did not believe their kin and insisted that body was of their daughter and finally cremated it.

Later in the evening, the family received a call from Amritpal Kaur. She said that she was alive and staying at Golden Temple. A police team immediately went to Amritsar to bring the girl to Bathinda.

Bathinda senior superintendent of police Sukhchain Singh Gill had a tough time to explain why his men buy the claim of the family that the body found from a room was that of their daughter Amritpal Kaur's and allowed family to perform the last rites even when doubts were raised on the identity of the body before cremation.

"We were working with family to found the missing girl from past one week. When the body was found, we called the family and they confirmed that she was their daughter. We conducted the postmortem and every necessary procedure for the investigation was followed," said SSP Gill.

He said, "We have even preserved the DNA sample of the body. The cremation of the body will not affect the further investigation as we had photographed the body and the spot where it was found.

DNA sample will help establish the identity of the dead girl."

"We have already started investigation. Some men have been rounded up to in connection with the mystery. We are also looking into records of missing girls from the surrounding districts to identify the body," the SSP added.

About the reason why Amritpal Kaur left home, the SSP said, "She is a religious person and went to Amritsar to pay obeisance at Golden Temple. She had differences with the family and did not inform them before leaving."
