A deaf-mute married woman was allegedly raped by an employee of a department store here last week. The incident took place on Sunday, but it took the shocked woman a few days to reveal it to her husband. The latter approached the police, who arrested the accused, Manpreet Singh, after identification by the victim.

Dharam Dev Singh, station house officer (SHO), Urban Estate police station, said the woman's husband had told them that she used to visit a gurdwara every Sunday. On the fateful day, she went to the gurdwara with a woman from Manjit Nagar, who was having an affair with Manpreet.Later, Manpreet offered to drop her home. However, he took her to a department store in Gurbax Colony, where he raped her.

"My wife tried to express what had happened, but I failed to understand. When she started weeping and showed me the injury marks, the truth dawned on me," the husband said. The SHO said they nabbed the accused after interrogating the woman who had accompanied the victim to the gurdwara.

A case under sections 365, 376 and 342 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered. The SHO said the police would take the help of special teachers to record the victim's statement.
