Government Railway Police (GRP) officials usually deal with cases of death or crime that occur in the railway section attribute these deaths to negligence and haste on the part of the victims.
In June, 45 deaths took place on rail track in the district.

Though there has been slight decrease in the railway accidents, it still remains matter of concern.
In July, there were 34 deaths on rail tracks in the district of which 25 died in accident, four committed suicide.

GRP officials said the Jalandhar-Phagwara railway line, Sodal and Ramnagar level crossings are some of most accident-prone spots in the district.

A senior GRP official said, "People usually put their lives under risk in haste. It is a usual sight at every level crossing in the city. People start walking at a level crossing even if the train is approaching."

Davinder Singh, station house officer, GRP, said, "We assure the passengers' safety under our jurisdiction. But it is also their responsibility to follow the rules and not try to cross level crossing when the barriers are closed so as to avoid any mishap."
