A debt-ridden farmer whose cotton crop was destroyed by whitefly committed suicide at Jhumba village in this district on Saturday evening.
The family rushed Rajveer Singh to the local civil hospital where he died. The victim owned four acres of land and had taken six acres on lease to grow cotton, which was destroyed in the pest attack.
He was to pay a debt of Rs 5 lakh to moneylenders and banks and was under stress.
BKU (Ekta-Ugrahan) district president Shingara Singh Mann said the family should be given Rs 10 lakh in compensation besides a government job.
However, Nandgarh police station SHO expressed ignorance about the suicide.
