Debt-ridden farmer commits suicide in Moga village

A debt-ridden farmer allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his house in Khote village under Baghapurana sub-division; 37 km from the district headquarters, on Tuesday evening.

According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Gurmail Singh Soni, aged 36.
Veerpal Kaur, the wife of the deceased, said her husband had borrowed money from different banks as well as some commission agents, but he could not return it in time.

"As a result, his entire agricultural land and tools had to be sold during the past two-and-a-half years. Soni had been upset for the past five to six months, leading him to take the extreme step," said the deceased's wife.

Soni is survived by his wife, a minor son and daughter.

After recording the statements of the family members, the body was brought to the Dr Mathura Dass civil hospital, Moga, where a postmortem was conducted after which, the body was handed over to the family.
