A debt-ridden farmer, 50-year-old Angrej Singh, allegedly committed suicide on Wednesday night by hanging himself from the ceiling fan in his bedroom at Mandar Kalan village in Dharamkot sub-division, police said on Saturday.

Angrej, who owned just one acre of land, was seemingly under stress as he was struggling to pay back about Rs 7 lakh of loan taken from the village co-operative society and banks, according to Balwant Singh Behramke, local president of the the Bhartiya Kissan Union (BKU).

Behramke alleged that the family cremated Angrej without informing the police at the behest of the some prominent people. After receiving a complaint, district magistrate-cum-deputy commissioner Arshdeep Singh Thind has ordered an inquiry. "I am surprised that a debt-ridden farmer hanged himself but nobody informed the police," Thind said.
