Even as Ludhiana municipal corporation is finding it hard to arrange funds to take up many incomplete developmental projects, reply to an RTI query has revealed that the civic body has failed to realise a whopping over Rs 300 crore from defaulters over the years.
Surprisingly, no effort has reportedly been made by officials of different MC branches to realise this huge amount, which would fill the coffers of the cash-strapped civic body.
In the RTI reply, the MC had revealed that as much as Rs 3,20,07,64,571 was pending against defaulters vis-à-vis building branch, water and sewerage branch and house tax branch.
Rohit Sabharwal, who had sought details of defaulters of different branches of the MC on August 6 last year, has since filed a complaint with the principal secretary of the local bodies department that the dues should be recovered without delay.
The startling figures not only reveal that non-serious attitude of MC officials in realising the dues from the erring persons but also indicates how serious the defaulters take the civic body in clearing their dues.
Water and sewerage branch seems to be sleeping over files of defaulters, who owe the MC Rs 1,80,17,82,000. The RTI reply disclosed that Zone A had yet to realise Rs 43,45,72,000, Zone B Rs 36,10,84,000, Zone C Rs 39,43,86,000 and Zone D Rs 61,17,40,000.
All the zones of building branch were no good, which are yet to realise Rs 4,92,49,125. The zone-wise breakdown is Rs 1,97,00,000 (Zone D), Rs 1,32,93,381 (Zone C), Rs 1,06,54,517 (Zone B) and Rs 56,01,227 (Zone A).
On the other hand, Rs 1,11,23,52,000 is pending vis-à-vis house tax wing. As much as Rs 13,22,55,000 is pending in Zone A, Rs 27,62,89,000 with Zone B, Rs 35,54,61,000 with Zone C and Rs 34,83,47,000 with Zone D.
Defaulters also owe as much as Rs 23,73,81,446 to the octroi branch.
There are 1,706 defaulters of building branch, 71,740 of water and sewerage branch and 1,21,559 of house tax branch. There are 3,15,000 defaulters in Octroi branch of the MC.
Since the huge dues are pending for the past several years, there is no information on the exact date the defaulters owe money to the MC. The amount is increasing every year while the MC seems to be taking no action.
Mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwari and commissioner RK Verma had stated earlier that the dues should be recovered as soon as possible so that the empty coffers of the MC could be filled.
