A 20-year-old dejected lover killed a 19-year-old girl on Monday when she refused to accept his proposal to marry him at a village in Abohar, a subdivision of Fazilka district.
The boy later tried to commit suicide by consuming pesticide.
According to information, Pooja, a native of Maujgarh village, was going to work in a toffee-making factory in her village on Monday morning as usual.
In the meantime, Raju, a youth of her village, blocked her way and reportedly expressed his wish to her, but when she refused to accept his proposal, Raju got upset and cut her throat with a sharp-edged weapon (knife). When the injured girl cried for help, Raju fled from the spot. Meanwhile, Pooja succumbed to injuries and died on the spot. Later, Raju also tried to commit suicide by inhaling pesticide.
In view of his critical condition, Raju was admitted to a hospital in Sriganganagar in Rajasthan in a serious condition.
The postmortem on deceased Pooja was conducted at the civil hospital in Abohar after which the body was handed over to her family.
When contacted, Harjit Singh, superintendent of police, (Abohar), said that the accused had been booked under section 3029murder) of the IPC on the complaint lodged by Prem Kumar, father of Pooja. Further investigations are on.
