The delay in the monsoon this year, apart from affecting farmers, has also upset household budgets in the region with vegetable prices shooting up and in some cases, even doubling.

Although the prices of onions, potatoes and tomatoes increased by Rs 5-10 per kg, within a span of three weeks, the rate of peas skyrocketed to Rs 80 per kg from `40 per kg. Similarly, prices of lemons increased to Rs 60 per kg from `40 per kg while a survey of the Sirhind vegetable market revealed that rates of many vegetables had inflated by Rs 5-10 per kg.

Shiv Kumar, a vegetable vendor, said in June the rate of onion was Rs 20-25 whereas now it has increased Rs 30 kg. He said rates of potato, tomato, lady finger, bottle gourd and bitter gourd increased by Rs 5-10 per kg.
Mahesh Kumar, another vendor, said that rates of lemon and cauliflower had jumped by 50% in the last three weeks.
Meanwhile, the rates of white pumpkin remained stable at Rs 10-15 per kg.
