A minor girl from Delhi who had left her house over family issues and reached Amritsar to pray at the Golden Temple has reported sexual assault by an auto-rickshaw driver here.
The girl had arrived in Amritsar by train, and at the railway station, hired an auto-rickshaw to reach the Golden Temple. New to the city, she didn’t know her way around, so the auto-rickshaw driver took her to Bhagtanwala Chowk here, where according to the girl, he attempted to rape her.
The incident is of February, after which Delhi Police had traced the girl and restore her to her family. On Saturday, however, came the victim’s statement from Delhi, and the district police registered a case against the auto-rickshaw driver whom she can’t identify. The case is lodged under Section 354 (criminal force to outrage modesty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the C Division police station.
The victim, 16, had left her house to escape the stress because of the drinking habits of her father and brother. “The issue was the source of arguments between her parents,” C-Division station house officer (SHO) inspector Surinder Singh said here on Sunday.
Last September, an auto-rickshaw driver had molested a Danish woman (25) on the footbridge near the local railway station. The accused was, later, arrested. In November last year, a policeman here raped a tourist from Delhi.
