Retired state mass media and education officer Satish Sachdeva conducted an ‘Dengue Awareness’ seminar at Dr Punj Holy Heart Senior Secondary School, Punjab Mata Nagar, on Tuesday.
Nearly 400 students who participated in the seminar were apprised of the methods to purify water, keep their surroundings clean to ensure water does not collect and the need to clean coolers and flower pots regularly.
Sachdeva asked students to take a proactive role in prevention of the vector-borne illness, “Dengue-fever can be prevented by taking adequate measures. I have selected schools because there I can interact with a large number of students, who in turn will make their parents aware about the disease and its prevention.”
A study recently published in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene has pegged dengue cases in India at around 6 million between 2006 and 2012—282 times higher than the figures officially reported by the health ministry.
