A day after Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader and Ellenabad legislator Abhay Chautala blamed Dera Sacha Sauda openly for his party’s defeat in the assembly elections, dera head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh on Saturday condemned his statement in a press release issued here.
Dera spokesperson Pawan Insan stated that the remarks of the INLD leader were “unfortunate and baseless”. “The dera followers are like a family, and in the elections, decided unanimously to vote for a party that promised social welfare. No one has the right to bully us over that,” he added.
He told Abhay Chautala that “to win the people’s hearts, the INLD should join the campaign against drug trade, female foeticide, corruption, alcohol abuse and other social evils”. “If the leader is thinks that by disparaging the saints, he would achieve anything, it was his deep misconception, because the only goal of the dera is to serve the humanity,” said the spokesman.
Addressing party workers at Sonepat on Friday, Abhay Chautala had targeted Ram Rahim, saying: “INLD ka rasta rokne wala baba bachega nahi. Ek Baba jail mein ja chukka hai or doosra bhi jayega (The baba that blocked the INLD path to power will not escape. One baba (Rampal) has gone behind bars, and the other (Ram Rahim) will too).”
If the BJP tried to help Ram Rahim, it would risk damaging its image, Abhay Chautala had said. “The dera chief is the reason for our defeat (in the elections). Until October 13 (when Ram Rahim announced support to the BJP), we were number one in the race but the scenario changed later,” he had added.
Since the statement, the dera followers are upset.
