Despite 70,000 visitors daily, rly station has only 28 chairs

punjab Updated: Jul 17, 2014 15:04 IST

For a daily footfall of 70,000 at the city railway station there are only 28 chairs available for the passengers to sit in the waiting area due to which passengers either sit at the station entrance or at the platforms, thus creating chaos.

There are a total of seven platforms at the station, with approximately five benches on each, but that can only accommodate the passengers waiting for their train on a platform.

Despite the situation, the railway authorities have not taken any measures to make proper and sufficient seating arrangement.

On the one hand the railway ministry has been making towering claims of introducing several modern amenities in rails, such as bullet and metro trains, but on the other hand the authorities have even failed to provide seating facilities.

A large number of passengers can been seen sitting or sleeping on the floor at the entrance of the station, thus making it difficult for other passengers to move around. However, the police personnel deployed to bring things in order, play a mute spectator to all this.

One of the frequent passengers to the railway station, Daulat Ram, said, “City railway station is considered to be one of the busiest junctions in the region, but sadly fails to provide the very basic seating arrangement on its premises.”

Only a few benches have been installed on the station premises, once they get filled, passengers are left with no option but to sit on floor, unknowingly blocking the walking area.”

When contacted, station superintendent RK Sharma said, “I am aware of the fact that there is insufficient seating arrangement at the railway station, but passengers visiting the railway station hours before their boarding time, adds to the congestion. The number of platforms will be increased in the future, requests for which have been pending with the higher authorities.”

“Goods section will also be relocated to Baddowal soon, which will help in vacating more space for seating,” the station superintendent said.
