Even though the modern dump set up in Partap Bagh area, launched in September last year has not yielded the expected results, municipal corporation Jalandhar (MCJ) is all set to replicate the model at different open dumping points across the city.

MCJ has said that since the first set up was on trial basis they will certainly upgrade the mechanism while building it in other places.

The model is a complete failure. Its entrance is narrow while opening of the dump is towards the market. Cleanliness workers never bother to dump the waste inside it, said Suman Sehgal, area councillor. Previously the dump on trail basis had opening towards the market area, which will be worked upon now.

“We will be upgrading the model as we found various discrepancies during the trial. The upgraded one will definitely be more efficient in containing waste,” said mayor Sunil Jyoti.

Confirming the development, assistant medical officer (AMO) MCJ Dr Shri Kishan Sharma informed that a city based company has already been outsourced by the civic body for the work and order for the same has also been released. The process of setting up the said dumps will start by next week, said Sharma.

Some of the areas that the officials mentioned are near Sai Das School, Jyoti Nagar, Police station number 1, Maqsudan vegetable market, Sarb Mulitplex. The cost of modern dump built last year was `6 lakh.

The construction cost for the modern dump is likely to increase this time. There has been no check on the functioning of the dump, it has been totally un-operational.

The MCJ should make a proper use of the funds that it is receiving through Swacch Bharat Abhiyan, said Jagdish Raja, leader of opposition.

Under Swacch Bharat Mission, the corporation is planning to have these modern dumps at 70 major points in the city.

Modern dump is a planned and controlled site for solid and non-hazardous waste disposal. The main function of this dump is to prevent the possible health risk that the open dump carries otherwise.

The modern dump helps to collect garbage at a particular place in the area without any compromise with the surrounding areas.

Though the purpose of these dumps was to cover open dump, it has failed as the garbage is lying in the surroundings of the modern dump.

Lack of maintenance of the dump has only worsened the condition in the past one year.

It has been learnt that the civic body is planning to increase the slope of modern dump so that cleanliness workers can easily dump the waste on the spot without dumping it in other places.
