In spite of stiff opposition by power engineers, the Punjab government is considering to give a two-year extension to KD Chaudhri as chairman-cum-managing director (CMD) of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL).

The goverment has convened a meeting with power engineers to discuss the issue on January 31.

On February 9, Chaudhry will attain the age of 62 years, fixed for retirement in the tripartite agreement signed by the Punjab government, the erstwhile Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) and the Employees Union and Association, while bifurcating the PSEB into two entities meant for distribution and transmission.

Though only 10 working days are left before the scheduled retirement date of Chaudhry, the government has so far not placed an advertisement for the post of CMD, selection for which will take at least two months.

Sources said the power secretary conveyed the date of retirement to chief minister Parkash Singh Badal for further action, but instead of asking for advertising the post, the CM has asked the power secretary to mull options for the extension.
