Devendra Kumar Sharma, managing director of Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited, will be the new chairman of the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB).
The BBMB manages the release of water in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan as it controls Bhakra, Pong and other dams. The post of chairman had been lying vacant since September 2015 and its temporary charge was given to member, irrigation, SK Sharma.
The appointment committee of the Union cabinet approved DK Sharma’s name, and the power ministry will issue a formal order soon. The appointment is for a period of three years on deputation from the date of assuming charge.
DK Sharma has been associated with the power sector for over 30 years. Serving in the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board, he was instrumental in implementing and commissioning Tata Hydro Power Station in Bhutan. He was also associated with the industrial giant Larsen & Toubro for a long time in its infrastructure development projects.
Punjab had been demanding a regular appointment on the post of BBMB chairman for its smooth functioning. SK Sharma, who was to retire on January 31 this year, was given extension till January 31, 2018, or the appointment of BBMB chairperson, whichever is earlier. The orders came on the day of his scheduled superannuation. Both Punjab and Rajasthan had protested this move.
