A Sessions court on Tuesday dismissed the plea of senior Punjab police officer SPS Basra, an accused in the infamous Kuljit Singh Dhatt custodial death case, to postpone the trial till May 11 when Punjab and Haryana high court would hear his appeal against its earlier orders regarding trial of the case.

Last year, the high court had dismissed the petition, wherein the cops had challenged Punjab government's decision to accord sanction for their prosecution thus giving way for the trial of the accused in Hoshiarpur session court.

Additional session judge JS Bhinder fixed the next date of hearing for April 18.

He also summoned the entire record pertaining to the case as requested by the defence counsel. Former DSP Jaspal Singh appeared in the court on Tuesday.

Dhatt, a former director of Bhogpur sugar mill and son-in-law of Shaheed Bhagat Singh's sister, was allegedly picked up by the police in July 1989 and killed. The police, however, claimed that he had escaped from custody.
