Disgruntled BJP leader Pradeep Sangwan joined the Congress at Sonepat on Wednesday.

Sangwan, son of three-time Sonepat MP and senior Jat leader Kishan Sangwan, was desperate to seek the saffron party ticket from Sonepat, but the party chose Ramesh Kaushik, a former Congressman, over him.

Hours after Kaushik's name was declared on March 15, Sangwan's supporters raised slogans against state president Ram Bilas Sharma of betraying him. He had also resigned from the state secretary's post and announced to resign from the party.

But the next morning, he told mediapersons that he had resigned only from the post and not from the party and would get the party nominee changed after meeting national president Rajnath Singh.

After a failed attempt, he filed his nomination as an independent candidate, but with the rider that in case he got elected, he would support party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.

On Tuesday, he held a meeting with chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda in a clandestine manner at Rohtak, saying he had met him owing to personal reasons.

On Wednesday, after formally joining the Congress in the presence of Hooda, he said he would withdraw his nomination and support the Congress.

Sources said Hooda had assured him of the ticket from Sonepat in the assembly polls scheduled at the end of the year.
