Going by the recent hauls of drugs and arrests made by the police, the district seems to have become a hub of drug dealers.
In a special drive started against narcotics, the police recovered 15-kg cocaine, 34-kg Ice, a party drug popular among youth, about 6-kg heroine, 40-kg opium, 468-grams smack, 150 grams of marijuana and 9,000 quintals of poppy husk in the last six months.
Revealing these alarming figures, superintendent of police (SP) (detective), rural, Rajinder Singh did not rule out presence of international dealers active in the region.
A Canadian national was held from Kartarpur area in June with 1.5-kg cocaine worth Rs 15 crore in the international market.
The SP said John had taken a flight from Canada to Holland to catch the connecting flight to New Delhi.
"John had visited the city for the first time. During investigation we found he had come to take heroine, which was to be smuggled to Canada, in lieu of cocaine," said the SP. A Canadian passport and a car were also recovered from his possession.
His accomplice Satnam Singh, an NRI based in Canada, was still at large.
The SP said the recent hauls of 2-5-kg heroin by the Border Security Force suggested the contraband was being smuggled from across the border.
The figures also revealed the increasing presence of drug peddlers dealing in party drugs in the district. A senior official admitted it was a new trend.
The Anti-Narcotic Cell on June 27 arrested a drug peddler and recovered 30-gm of Ice worth Rs 50 lakh from his possession. The police had earlier held 18 people along with Ice worth Rs 200 crore and busted a factory manufacturing ice.
"We arrested as many as 313 persons under the NDPS Act. We have registered 244 cases in the last six months of the drive," said Singh.
Additional superintendent of police, city police, Diljinder Singh Dhillon said more than one kg heroine and 500 grams of smack was recovered within last month. "We arrested 26 persons and registered cases against 19," he said.
The police claimed they had obtained some vital clues from the arrested persons and would soon bust some active rackets.
