Two teenagers drowned after they dived in Sutlej river to take a bath on Thursday.

The victims, Gurpreet Singh, 17, and Baljinder Singh, 19, were residents of Haidon Bet village. The friends went to the river banks on their motorcycle and jumped into the river to take a bath.

However, Gurpreet started drowning, on seeing which Baljinder tried to rescue him. But, he, too, lost his balance and drowned.

A passerby sounded the police, who reached the spot and with the help of a diver fished out Gurpreet's body on Thursday night. Baljinder's body was pulled out by locals on Friday morning.

The police handed over the bodies to the families after autopsies.

While Gurpreet was a student of Class 11, Baljinder was a school dropout. He had given up studies to help his parents by working.

Earlier on May 5, a 22-year-old youth of Bhattian village had drowned after he was swept away by the river current while taking a bath in the Sutlej. Two of his friends, who had also jumped into the river, were rescued by passersby.

Despite several people losing their lives to taking a dip in the Sutlej, the local administration has failed to take steps to prohibit diving in the river.
