Chaos prevailed at the Nabha civil hospital when a group of people thrashed a government medical practitioner after a 60-year-old woman died in a hospital ward on Tuesday.

The victim, identified as Gudi Devi, a resident of local Haridas colony, was admitted at the hospital following the complaint of severe dehydration on Monday evening. The incident took place around 2:30pm when kin of the victim had gone to call a doctor; however, before the doctor on emergency duty — Dr Rajesh Kumar — could reach the patient, she died.

The family members of the woman alleged that the doctor was in “inebriated condition” and ‘took a long time’ to reach the emergency ward that caused her death . However, Balvir Singh, victim’s son, along with some other youth went to the doctor’s room and allegedly thrashed him. The doctor has reportedly received serious injuries in the assault.

Taking note of the allegations against the doctor, police immediately informed civil surgeon Dr HS Bali, who reached the spot immediately.

Bali said a 3-member board comprising doctors had been set up to probee the matter, besides they had taken blood samples of the doctor. “Minor smell of alcohol was emanating from the doctor’s mouth. Punjab health minister Surjit Jyani and director, health, have been apprised of the incident,” he said.
