A liquor vend owned by Akali leader and liquor baron Shiv Lal Doda, prime accused in the Abohar murder case, was set afire by miscreants on Tuesday night. A vend employee, Madan Lal, was also beaten up.

Around 9.30pm, five persons arrived at the vend near the grain market in Abohar, a subdivision of Fazilka district, and asked for a liquor bottle. After an argument with Madan Lal, they thrashed him and sprinkled petrol on the vend. Then they set it on fire and fled after stealing Rs 30,000 from the cash counter.

Injured Madan Lal was taken to the local civil hospital, while a police team led by superintendent of police (SP), Abohar, Harjit Singh, reached the spot to conduct an investigation.

When contacted, Amar Singh Chahal, deputy inspector general (DIG), Ferozepur range, who is also heading the four-member special investigation team (SIT) in the Abohar murder case, said, “Two of the accused have been arrested.”

So far, Doda’s five liquor vends have been set ablaze. On police instructions, all his vends were kept closed for several days after the murder.

Police have so far arrested 22 accused for the December 11 murder of Bhim Sain. Doda has sought anticipatory bail in the court of the additional district and sessions judge, Fazilka. The hearing on his plea would take place on January 2.
