A criminal case of dowry is on against five members, including three women, of the family of a senior leader of the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (DSD), and his grandson is also charged with bigamy.

Complainant Parminder Kaur of Lakhha village in Ludhiana district is married to Jagdeep Singh, grandson of SAD leader and former sarpanch Lall Singh, since January 18, 2009. The family is from Sangatpura village in this district. "The woman has told the senior superintendent of police that within only a few months of marriage, her husband and in-laws had started harassing her for dowry," Davinder Singh, assistant sub inspector of police at Baghapurana, has said.

The woman has accused her husband of demanding Rs 2 lakh and a Maruti car from her parents. "My parents gave away whatever dowry was settled during marriage," Parminder Kaur stated in her complaint. "My parents were unable to arrange more money and car for my in-laws at the moment."

She also alleged that Jagdeep Singh had kept her in dark about his second wife, Sandeep Kaur.
"My parents went to Sangatpura to strike a compromise but my husband declined," Parminder Kaur stated. "My husband and in-laws would beat me up often until they turned me out of the house at midnight after another round of assault."

A case has been registered against Parminder's husband, Jagdeep Singh, mother-in-law, Baljit Kaur; and father-in-law, Nachhattar Singh; besides Sandeep Kaur and one of family's close relatives, Kartar Kaur. The charges are listed under Sections 498-A (subjecting wife to cruelty), 406 (criminal breach of trust), 494 (bigamy) and 109 (continued abetting of crime) of the Indian Panel Code (IPC), but no arrest has been made, so far.
