A newly married Kapurthala woman has ended her life by hanging herself in Sanoura village of Jalandhar district and the police have booked her in-laws on the charges of abetting to suicide by demanding dowry. An FIR was lodged by victim's brother Raj Kumar.

In his complaint to Bhogpur police, Raj Kumar, a resident of Seenpura mohalla, Kapurthala revealed that his sister Sangeeta was married to Narinder Jit Singh in April 2011. "Since her marriage, her in-laws were not happy with the dowry and gifts we gave to her. They kept on grumbling, torturing and even beating my sister," he said.

Even their relatives and village people had, unsuccessfully, advised Narinder Jit to improve his conduct, he added.

"We had given Rs.50,000 to Narinder Jit a few months back to pacify them but her in-laws demanded one lakh more," he rued adding that Sangeeta told him over the phone that they thrashed her mercilessly on Wednesday morning.

"I got a call from Narinder Jit later on informing me that Sangeeta has ended her life by hanging herself. When we reached the village in a hurry, we found body of my sister lying on the bed and a piece of cloth hanging from the fan," Raj Kumar revealed.

"My sister can't take such an extreme step. We are sure she was strangulated to death by her in-laws, who are full of greed and were constantly torturing my sister since her marriage," he alleged.

SHO Bhogpur, Parminder Singh informed that a case was registered on the complaint of Raj Kumar under section 304-B of IPC against victim's husband Narinder Jit Singh, mother-in-law Gurmeet Kaur, husband's brother Gurinder Jit Singh and Gurinder Jit's wife Gurpreet Kaur. "Husband is under police custody while all other accused are at large," he added.

Her body was brought to her home town and was cremated here today.
