The district public relations officer (DPRO) of Ludhiana, Subhash Gupta, has been placed under suspension apparently after lack of proper media coverage of an event where information and public relations minister Bikram Singh Majithia was the chief guest.

Though the official reason cited is simply "negligence of duty", reliable sources told HT that Gupta had earned the wrath of Akali cabinet minister Majithia, who inaugurated a hydropower project near Doraha on March 20. The function commenced around 4pm and ended after 6pm, as a result of which the DPRO was late in sending a briefing to the media.

The event was thus covered a day late in some English publications, and carried only in the local editions by some dailies.

When contacted, Gupta said he knew nothing except that he had been suspended: "I have to appear in the department of information and public relations in Chandigarh on Monday."

Director, public relations, DS Mangat stuck to the official stance that the suspension was "the result of negligence in duty".

Despite repeated efforts, Majithia was not available for comment.
