A youth of Buttala village near Dhilwan was drowned in the Kali Bein after he jumped into it to escape people following him after a failed attempt to snatch a gold chain from two women.

Police sources said that Balwinder Singh along with his friend Gurpreet Singh had tried to snatch a gold chain from two women driving a scooter near Nawan Pind on the Kapurthala-Fattu Dhinga Road.

Kamaljeet Kaur of Gudana village was on way to Kapurthala along with her sister-in-law for shopping when the incident happened. As the two raised an alarm, the accused escaped from the spot on their motorbike. On hearing the women's call for help, passers-by joined the chase.

Balwinder jumped into the Kali Bein while Gurpreet of Chacha Colony in Lohian Khas was caught by the people. Later, it was noticed that Balwinder had drowned and his body was fished out.

Gurpreet confessed to his crime to police, adding that both were drug addicts and indulged in crime to arrange money to buy drugs.

Balwinder had married seven months ago. His family was in shock after the incident. "It is unbelievable. He belonged to well-to-do family and was never short of funds. All his family members were abroad. It is some conspiracy under which my son had been eliminated," said his mother.

Meanwhile, police have registered a case against Gurpreet under Sections 341 and 382 of IPC.
