The police claimed to have solved the sensational murder of 18-year-old New Janta Nagar girl whose body was fished out from Sidhwan Canal, with the arrest of her Nepalese neighbour who is said to be a drug addict.
Additional deputy commissioner of police (crime) Mukhwinder Singh said the accused, identified as Laxman Sharma, 22, was arrested from a grain market on Gill road following a tip off. He was missing from the house since Wednesday.
Laxman, a factory worker, first tried to rape the girl, but when she strongly resisted, he strangulated her, claim police. The accused has confessed to his crime, they added. During his interrogation, the accused revealed the names of his two accomplices. The police are trying to verify their role in the crime.
Laxman said he had befriended the girl two years ago, said Shimlapuri station house officer inspector Mukhwinder Singh. Laxman said he had asked the girl to meet him after the school on Wednesday. “He was high on drugs at that time. He took the girl to an isolated place and tried to rape her. When the girl resisted and threatened to complain against him, he injured her with a sharp- edged weapon and later strangulated her,” said the police officer.
To conceal the identity of the body, he removed her clothes and stuffed them into her school bag. Later, along with his two accomplices, Laxman threw her body in the canal. The SHO said The ADCP said the police were waiting for the medical report for confirmation of rape.
