A drug convict at the Ludhiana Central jail reportedly tried to commit suicide on Tuesday morning by slitting his throat with a mosquito-coil stand in a bathroom of the jail premises.
Jail officials said that early in the morning, inmates heard loud cries coming from the bathroom. When they rushed to the spot, they saw the convict, Balpreet Singh, lying in a pool of blood on the floor.
They immediately sounded the jail officials, who rushed him to Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), where he underwent a surgery. His condition is now stated to be stable.
The police post, Tajpur road, has initiated investigation in the case. ASI Harbhajan Singh, incharge at police post Tajpur road, said that the reason behind the extreme step has not been ascertained yet. The police will question him after the doctor declares him fit to record a statement.
Meanwhile, jail officials are shocked over the alleged suicide bid as they said that Balpreet was about to be released on October 30 after completing his sentence.
Balpreet Singh, 28, of Rupalo village of Samrala was arrested for drug peddling in 2011. He was convicted in the case and got imprisonment.
