Drug peddler flees from custody

Notorious smuggler Harjinder Kaur alias Billi, a resident of Mohalla Rangharra on Friday escaped from police custody. Sources said Billi was arrested after five kg poppy husk was seized from her, followed by registration of a case under the NDPS Act.

Kaur was brought to Nurmahal Civil Hospital for medical check-up before being produced in a Phillaur court. Phillaur DSP Sarabjit Rai said when police was accompanying during the medical check-up, his sons Pala, Gurdev and nephew on two motor cycles reached the hospital premises and freed Billi from the custody of a woman constable and ran away.

The accused left one motor cycle on the way which has been recovered by the police, said the DSP. Billi is facing trial in five cases of smuggling and attack on police.

SHO Vijaykanwalpal said a case under Section 224 (obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) has been registered against Billi, her sons and her nephew. SP (D) Rajinder Singh, said, "A departmental inquiry has been initiated against the police personnel. Special teams are chasing the absconding accused and they will be nabbed soon."
