Three days after an accused of drug peddling was released on bail, he was stabbed to death at his house at Gandhi Colony in Model Gram area on late Friday night. The victim, Rakesh Kumar, 33, was a taxi driver.
At the time of the incident, his wife, Ritu, was present in an adjoining room; but she claimed that she did not see anyone entering the house. Ritu told the police that Rakesh was in his room, while she and their children were watching television in another room.
Suddenly, she heard screams of her husband, and when she rushed to the room, she was shocked to see her husband lying on the floor in a pool of blood.
She raised an alarm, following which neighbours arrived and sounded the police. Rakesh was rushed to a local hospital. But he succumbed to his injuries on the way, Ritu said. The Division Number 5 police have registered a case of murder against unidentified killers following her statement.
According to inspector Dharampal of Division Number 5 station, the accused repeatedly stabbed Rakesh in the neck, chest and abdomen.
The SHO said it was strange that the accused entered the house, attacked the victim and escaped without anyone coming to know of it.
“We interrogated many area residents, but no one expressed knowledge. We are working on several theories and would solve the case soon,” he claimed.
The Division Number 6 police had arrested Rakesh in March after recovering heroin from his possession. He had availed of bail in April after spending one month behind the bars. However, after he jumped the bail, the court issued warrants last week and sent him to Ludhiana central jail on judicial remand. After spending three days in jail, he was bailed out three days ago.
