The Special Investigation Team (SIT), constituted to probe the alleged role of Congress leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira in backing an international drug smuggler nabbed by the Fazilka police recently, has issued summons to Khaira’s personal security officer (PSO) to join the investigations against Khaira.
A few days ago, the Fazilka police had claimed to have unearthed a racket of heroin smuggling with the arrest of eight people, including the kingpin, who was allegedly close to Congress leader and former Khaira.
The seizure from them included 2kg heroin, 2 Pakistani sims, one Pakistani mobile phone, 24 gold biscuits (333 gms), 2 firearms and a SUV.
The police have termed Gurdev Singh of Bholath, former chairman of the market committee, Dhilwan, and a close associate of Khaira, former MLA Bholath, as the mastermind behind the racket.
The SIT, set up by Paramraj Singh Umranangal, IGP, Bathinda zone, is led by Amar Singh Chahal, DIG, Ferozepur, along with SSP Fazilka and SP(D), Fazilka.
When the Fazilka police got to know about Gurdev’s role in the heroin smuggling racket, he switched off his mobile, but Gurdev continued to contact Khaira through Khaira’s PSO Joga Singh using the mobile of his driver Manjit Singh (Gurdev’s driver), the police had claimed.
“Joga Singh has been called back from the security of Khaira and asked to join investigations soon. If anything concrete is revealed during the investigation about Khaira’s complicity in the drug racket, then Khaira would also be summoned soon by th eSIT,” revealed official sources.
“Today, Manjit Singh, driver of Gurdev, was also arrested, and during interrogation, revealed that more than sixty youths of Lakhan Ke Padde village were pushed into drug-taking by Gurdev and Gurdev was a regular supplier of drugs to them,” sources added.
The police have also alleged that Gurdev’s UK-based sister remained in touch with Khaira between February 28 and March 6 to plead for Gurdev’s innocence and Khaira reportedly assured her to free Gurdev from the case.
Gurdev, being a close aide of Khaira, had allegedly funded his elections since 1997 and Khaira had given him the responsibility of ten surrounding villages of Lakhan Ke Padde (home village of Gurdev) relating to various works during or after the elections, the police further said.
Besides Gurdev, the others arrested in the case include Gurdev Chand, Balel ke Hasil, Guru Har Sahai, Ferozepur; Manjit Singh, Rajpur Araiyan village, Bholath, Kapurthala; Subhash, a resident of Hissan Wala, Guru Har Sahai; Harbans Singh, Dhandi Kadim, Jalalabad, Fazilka; Sonia, Kapurthala, Sandeep alias Shanty of Mahalla Rathoda, Jalalabad; Nirmal Singh @ Nimma, Jalalabad in Fazilka.
Fazilka senior superintendent of police (SSP) Swapan Sharma acknowledged the arrest of Manjit Singh, but refused to divulge further details of the case saying it might hamper the investigation of the matter.
Khaira, while addressing a press conference a few days ago, had rebuffed the charges of his involvement in teh drug racket as levelled by Gurdev and had demanded a CBI probe to ascertain the truth.
