Call it the outcome of work stress, effect of excessive consumption of liquor or something else, a Punjab police cop in an inebriated condition tried to self-immolate at the official residence of a woman judge at Talwandi Sabo on Wednesday night.

The attempt, however, was not successful. Constable Sukh Dev Singh is posted at the Talwandi Sabo police station and was deployed with sub-divisional judicial magistrate Sucheta Ashish Dev on Wednesday night. He entered the judge's house at the judicial complex at around 8 am, carrying a bottle of petrol.

He was overpowered, arrested and has been locked in Talwandi Sabo police station.

The cop who has been put under suspension for his act has also been booked for attempt to commit suicide, criminal trespass and using abusive language against the woman judge under Sections 309, 452 and 294, respectively based on a complaint by the judge.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Talwandi Sabo, Dev Dutt Sharma said: "He had gone on leave after taking permission from the judge. However, he had not reported to work after his sanctioned leave and the judge had verbally informed the police of this," said Sharma.

"However, he did join on Wednesday and in the evening poured petrol on himself and entered the judge's house threatening to commit suicide. There was no stress on the constable and he was inebriated," he said.
