He is arrested for graft but the trap into which Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar deputy superintendent of police Gurbans Singh Bains fell was laid for his Chandigarh friend NK Goel.
Studying the mobile-phone call details of Goel to verify the input that he was involved in hawala (money laundering) transactions, the police chanced upon the information that DSP Bains also had moved unaccounted money. Further findings suggested that the police officer had abused his position to obtain illegal gratification.
On March 27, the police laid a trap and arrested Goel and Bains. Highly placed sources in the police confirmed that the plan was to catch Goel only until call details revealed that the DSP was in touch with him.
The police widened the scope of investigation and collected evidence against Bains. They got an input that on March 27, he would transact cash from Ludhiana. That’s where the arrests came, after which the police searched the DSP’s bank lockers and seized money. After the arrest, many police officials and close aides of Bains have gone underground and stopped taking telephone calls.
