The Democratic Teachers Front (DTF) at the Punjabi University extended their support to the ongoing protests by college teachers criticising the "adamant and lackadaisical attitude of the Punjab government" in ignoring higher education in the state.

Saying that teachers in aided colleges had not been given salaries for the past 13 months, DTF convener Jaswinder Brar claimed, "The non-release of the promised grant is playing havoc with the financial health of colleges. The proposed move of the state government to reduce grants from 95% to 80% is a retrograde step."

Instead of filling the 1925 posts in aided colleges, the Punjab government is bent upon legalising under-payment to teaching faculty by supporting non-regular modes of recruitment, he said. "The state must change its approach towards the aided sector in higher education to strengthen it by providing funds and promoting policies which are friendly to teachers, students and institutions," he said.

The teachers, under the banner of Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU), held protest in Chandigarh on Thursday.
