The efforts made by the Amritsar district administration at ensuring the maximum voter turnout in the recently held Lok Sabha elections have paid rich dividends as the Election Commission of India (ECI) has awarded the first rank to Amritsar in the implementation of Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme.

Ravi Bhagat, district election officer-cum-deputy commissioner, Amritsar, is among the district election officers-cumdeputy commissioners from the north zone who have been invited to give a presentation about their exceptional work, for which the EC proposes to confer awards on them. According to a press release, Bhagat is the only deputy commissioner from Punjab to be nominated.

He has been invited to give a presentation in Chandigarh on July 25. The presentation is likely to witness the participation of deputy commissioners from Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Chandigarh and Delhi.

Under the SVEEP programme, the district administration had taken a host of initiatives to inspire voters to exercise their franchise besides also announcing discounts at various eating joints and hotels for the first-time voters. “The aim behind these initiatives was to inspire and attract the voters, especially the youth aged 18 and above, to exercise their franchise,” Bhagat said, adding that the SVEEP scheme was introduced by the EC to improve voter participation in the Lok Sabha elections.
