The Election Commission of India (ECI) has authorised the chief electoral officers (CEOs) of all states and union territories to take decision on the merit of each case referred to them for release of funds for ongoing agricultural schemes and permission for normal purchase and distribution of inputs for the coming Kharif season.

Principal secretary K Ajay Kumar, in a communication, forwarded a copy of a demi-official letter received from the department of agriculture and cooperation, said that the chief electoral officers would take decision considering the importance of "seasonality of agricultural operations and to ensure that any operation of agriculture related to pre-kharif does not suffer".

Union secretary agriculture and cooperation Ashish Bahuguna , in a demi-official letter to deputy election commissioner Vinod Zutshi, has asked the ECI to instruct chief electoral officers not to stop release of funds for ongoing agricultural schemes and permit normal purchase and distribution of inputs for the kharif season.

Punjab chief electoral officer has directed all deputy commissioners to implement ECI directions strictly.
